I believe that society has both the right and the power to protect all of its members, including the unborn.  On the other hand, though, coercive schemes are bound to backfire.  Rather than thinking about criminalizing abortion we should be looking for ways of protecting women against unwanted pregnancy and providing more support for women who carry children to term despite difficult circumstances.

It will be impossible to eradicate abortion without drastically improving the percentage of people who value the lives of the unborn.  People aren't even going to consider extending human rights to fetuses if the only way we can think of to do that is to override mothers' pregnancy decisions.  Eliminating abortion is an issue of social justice and a matter of concern for the weak and the vulnerable -- but people aren't going to see it that way if we keep trying to make things more difficult for 'a girl in trouble'.
