Nickie Imanguli is a junior at the University of Maryland College Park, originally from Baku, Azerbaijan. This is Nickie's second year on the Advocates for Youth International Youth Leadership Council. In addition, she is a member of the Student Global AIDS Campaign and Student Advocates for Education about Rape (SAFER). She also serves as an Alternative Spring Break leader and works with the HELP center, which provides students on campus with information about sexually transmitted infections (STIs), pregnancy, sexual assault, etc. As a part of the IYLC, last March Nickie spoke about the PATHWAY Act at a briefing on Capitol Hill for International Women’s Day and, this past World AIDS Day, she spoke to youth issues, specifically the abstinence-until-marriage earmark, at a Washington, DC rally in Lafayette Park.

This World AIDS Day, I feel hopeful. Hopeful that a new administration will undo some of the harmful, ideologically based policies that have stifled real progress in HIV/AIDS prevention work.

Congresswoman Barbara Lee spoke out forcefully at the International AIDS Conference on policy reforms including defunding abstinence-only programs, authorization of the REAL Act, support for clean needle exchange programs, and the creation of a domestic PEPFAR.
