Julia is co-chair of the board of directors at the Chicago Abortion Fund. In 2010, she helped found the Chicago Female Condom Campaign to promote access to the only receptive partner-initiated tool that protects against both unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

By day Julia works as a project manager at Firefly Partners, focusing on website design and online marketing for small and mid-size nonprofit organizations. She recently completed a fellowship with Heartland International in a State Department-sponsored exchange program for young public interest professionals in the United States and Turkey.

Previously, Julia worked in online communications and public policy at the Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health, a sexual health advocacy organization. She has experience working in field organizing at Population Connection, health policy at the National Organization for Women, and development at the Pediatric AIDS Chicago Prevention Initiative.

She was named the 2010 Junior Advocate of the Year by the Illinois Maternal and Child Health Coalition and served as a 2008-2009 fellow of the Northwestern University Public Interest Program.

Julia holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology and urban studies from Northwestern University, where she wrote her senior honors thesis on the use of the emergency contraceptive pill as a preventive health behavior among young adults.

Quite the contentious issue, the Illinois Parental Notice of Abortion Act has never been enacted due to a court injunction -- until now. The law, scheduled to go into effect yesterday, now remains in political limbo pending a lawsuit and considerations from a regulation department.

Chicago City Council Passes Buffer Zone Ordinance

The Chicago City Council recently passed an ordinance establishing a buffer zone outside all medical facilities to protect health care workers, volunteers, and patients from harassment and obstruction.
