Ariel Dougherty has 40 years experience working in women’s media.  Currently she coordinates a national project, Media Equity Collaborative, to explore the feasibility of establishing a new fund expressly aimed at supporting women’s media organizations.  In the Fall of 2008 she wrote an article for Global Media Journal: “The Intersections of Women Centered Media, Its Funding, and The Struggle for Our Human Rights.” (http://lass.calumet.purdue.edu/cca/gmj/fa08/gmj-fa08-dougherty.htm).  In 1969 she was a co-founder with Sheila Paige of Women Make Movies.

Globally mainstream media writes and broadcasts women’s and girls stories only 21% of the time. So, we must ask, while occasional, even excellent stories, do make it into the New York Times, isn’t the publication a part of the problem?
