A real alternative to abortion?
I mean, we support choice. We try to keep access to all choices available and legal. But, we're failing.
For the women who don't want to (or can't) continue being pregnant but don't want their preborn children to die, there is no real choice. What about the women who can't continue their pregnancy due to concerns for their life and health but would like to have their child? With the available options, those women aren't able to make the choice they want. They are forced to sacrifice either what's best for them or what they want.
Someone needs to create an option that would allow women to end their pregnancies early that would allow the child to live. Since that would be creating another choice, it might be best done by someone who supports choice. I'm pretty sure Pro-Lifers would support that choice too, because it would be an alternative to the preborn child dying (which is what they're really against).
That would be a true common ground approach. It would be something people on both sides of the abortion debate could support because it would allow a woman to choose life for her child and end her pregnancy if she wants.
The only problem is inventing the technology to be able to make a choice like that a reality. I'm sure we can't be too far away from having technology to transfer a fetus from one woman to another since we're able to transfer embryos made in labs to women.
Anyone else think that if we ever have the technology available that would be a good option to have?
Interesting concept, but is it medically possible? YIKES! Messy, indeed. Perhaps it's easier to place the chid in the arms of someone who wants him/her......like adoption?
I'm not sure if my idea would be possible yet, but if we have things like IVF, we shouldn't be too far off from having the right technology (or if someone wants to invent it sooner, that'd be cool).
Adoption isn't an alternative to abortion. Adoption is an alternative to parenting the child.
When pregnant women have no health insurance (can't afford it) and make too much money to qualify for state health insurance they don't really get much of a choice. They either don't get the healthcare they need while pregnant, get the healthcare they need while pregnant and not have enough money for something else, or have an abortion. They deserve a fourth option that would help them.
The only choice a woman currently has if she doesn't want to or can't carry the pregnancy to term right now is to have an abortion. I'm suggesting we create an alternative to abortion where the preborn child won't be killed. I know some women would still have an abortion, but it would give some women (the ones who would regret the abortion) a choice that's better for them.
If money is an issue for carrying the child to term, I have a hard time seeing how this would be any better. Such a technology wouldn't be cheap. It might work for women with more money who would abort for health reasons. Either way, I don't really see it being a practical solution for most women, though it is nice to dream about.
True, it would probably be spendy. But, I'd rather spend my money and let the child live than spend it to have the child killed. I'm Pro-Choice but there's got to be a better option for women.
Depending on where the woman lives and what doctors/hospitals she uses, it would be possible for it to be around the same cost of carrying to term (and would save her money because she wouldn't need as much recovery time).
We'll just have to wait and see if anyone actually creates a real abortion alternative to find out for sure about anything with it.
