Former Governor Tommy Thompson (R-WI) is unapologetically anti-choice. He believes that Roe v. Wade should be overturned.
"I believe it should be left up to the states. That was what was originally implied, and the Constitution was changed when the Supreme Court made the decision [in Roe v. Wade]. I have made a record of pro-life for a long time, signing the partial-birth abortion, pre-notification for parents and so on. I think it's an important imperative that states have the responsibility for making these laws."
Thompson also commended the Supreme Court for upholding the federal abortion ban.
On his website, Thompson provides his statement on abortion:
"Governor Thompson is pro-life and signed one of the nation's first partial-birth abortion bans. Under Thompson, the number of adoptions in Wisconsin increased by 22 percent, while the number of abortions decreased by 37 percent. Just as he did in Wisconsin, Thompson would appoint strict constructionist judges who do not legislate from the bench."
NARAL Pro-Choice America gave Thompson's voting record a score of 0 percent for 1997, 1999, 2000, 2002; in 1998 he received a score of 10 percent.
However, Thompson does support eliminating racial and ethnic disparities in health.
Tommy Thompson thinks the free market can provide affordable health care for all Americans:
