Sam Brownback on Reproductive Health Issues

Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS) is adamantly anti-choice. He wants to overturn Roe v. Wade and was very pleased with the Supreme Court decision to uphold the federal abortion ban.

On his website, Brownback provides his anti-abortion position:

"Life: Life is worthy of respect and protection from the moment of conception. I fear that our society has forgotten the value of human life. I believe every life has intrinsic meaning and purpose, and that the termination of life is taken too lightly in our country today. Abortion ends a human life. It destroys an individual who could have lived and participated in our society. Already, it has eliminated tens of millions of children. I believe we should strive to fully embrace a culture of life through our national politics. I will continue to fight to protect life at every stage. I hope that one day America will remember the value we once placed on human life."

NARAL Pro-Choice America gave Brownback a score of 0 percent from 2002-2006.

Brownback voted against funding to reduce teen pregnancy by education and contraceptives. He voted for the federal abortion ban, to maintain a ban on military base abortions and for a criminal penalty to harm a fetus during other crime (Unborn Victims of Violence Act). Brownback also introduced the Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act (S. 356).

Brownback spreads misinformation about abstinence education:

"Studies show that teens who start having sex at young ages are more likely to become infected with sexually transmitted diseases, while girls who begin sexual activity at an earlier age are far more likely to have abortions. Early sexual activity is also linked to higher levels of out-of-wedlock birth and higher poverty rates. In contrast, repeated evaluations show that abstinence education programs substantially reduce teen sexual activity."
