The Senate health care reform bill was released last night and maintains the status quo on abortion access, throwing out any abortion coverage bans a la the Stupak Amendment; Catholics argue against the idea that banning private insurance coverage for abortion in the House bill was some kind of common ground effort; and DC disses birth control coverage.

In Uganda, though homosexual acts are already illegal, a new bill would penalize homosexuality with tougher penalties - along the lines of life imprisonment and the death penalty.

Last week, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit lifted the injunction (PDF) on the Washington State pharmacy rules that protect a patient's right to access medication without discrimination or delay. This is good news for the millions of women seeking to purchase contraception at pharmacies.

What is common ground? Can pro-lifers embrace birth control? Can pro-choicers embrace abortion's moral complexity? Should we pay women not to have an abortion? Will Saletan, of Slate, and I consider all the complicated questions.

The real moral challenge we face is how to ensure access to the means to prevent unintended pregnancies - specifically comprehensive sexuality education, universal access to contraceptive services, including emergency contraception, and education and employment opportunities for young women.
