Now that Obama has reversed Bush's executive order, scientists will be allowed to study stem cells from any lineage, including newly created lines, without jeopardizing their federal funding. But where will these new lines of stem cells come from?

Rather than elevating science above all when rescinding the stem cell funding ban, Obama was clear that using stem cells from existing embryos that are slated to be destroyed is consistent with respect for human life.

President-Elect Obama has an opportunity to cleanse the federal government of far too many ideological, non-scientifically based restrictions placed upon science by President Bush over the last eight years. One of these has to do with federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.

Not a day doesn't pass when I don't realize how lucky I am to be alive, but I also understand that there are millions like me who suffer from illnesses and injuries that could be one day cured through stem cell research.
