62 Percent of Americans Believe Abortion Should Be Legal in the First Trimester

A new Gallup poll on abortion rights main show Americans are pretty divided on almost everything.

Gallup has released a new poll on public perception of abortion, and some surprising issues come up.

Overall, almost two thirds of the country believe that abortion should be legal in the first trimester.  But once you begin putting restrictions on abortions, either with waiting periods, parental notification, informed consent or the like, women tend to approve of these roadblock slightly more than men.

Slightly more women believe in 24 hour waiting periods, “informed consent,” parental notifications  and even ultrasound requirements than the male respondents.  Yet once you begin limiting federal funding to clinics that provide abortions or mandate conscious clauses, men approve more of those restrictions.

But both sexes are likely to approve overwhelmingly of waiting periods, making it certain that any state without one can expect that piece of legislation to pop up in the next year or two.
