Kentucky Moves Forward on Ultrasound Bill

Lawmakers in Kentucky are considering a bill that will make mandatory ultrasounds part of the process before a woman can receive an abortion. The legislation will also add in the roadblock of forcing her to meet with a health care provider for "counseling" 24 hours prior to the procedure.

The law, which has made it through the Senate, is currently being reviewed by the House Health and Welfare Committee.  A similar bill stalled in committee last year.

If passed, Kentucky would become the 4th state to make viewing an ultrasound mandatory before obtaining an abortion in all cases, with the other three being Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama.  Arizona and Florida require ultrasounds if the abortion is after the first trimester.
