Sarah Palin-drone: Clashing Not Clever

Scott Swenson's picture

The world's most popular palindrome: A man, a plan, a canal Panama.

But this is not Teddy Roosevelt's Grand Old Party. It's not even John McCain's. This is Sarah Palin's Republican Party.  It is her far-right platform, her socially conservative delegates, her convention, her ideology.

In clever word play, simple lines can be read forwards and back, making a palindrome. But Palin's claims to social conservative values and her record on public policy -- neither witty, nor simple -- clash against reality, rather than flowing from it.

Her positions shall be known as Palin-drones: less clever, more complicated, often hypocritical, and repeated drone-like, to replace original thought with canned lines. Unlike palindromes, Palin-drones are not the least bit amusing to the thousands of Alaskan families her decisions impact, or the American families she's now speed dating.

  • She wants to hold up her family, and their values, as an model that others should follow, but believes people talking about the realities "all families face," using hers as an example, is off limits.
  • She says it is too "explicit" to teach comprehensive sexuality education that promotes resepect for self and partner, delayed sexual debut and facts about contraception, as most parents support. Instead she supports abstinence-only-until-marriage policies that have been proven quantitatively, and anecdotally, not to work.
  • She denigrates community organizers, but celebrates faith-based inititiaves which are a form of community organizing, including, one could argue, the abstinence-only-until-marriage programs run by right-wing Christian groups often without any public health expertise, often promoting religion. Community organizers are often required to have specific skill sets to ensure competence and accountability, and often work along side faith-based groups, both relying on and celebrating the volunteer spirit.
  • She says she is pro-contraception but hasn't defined that, and will likely keep the ideological soul mates she will find in Bush's  Department of Health and Human Services staff, who have proposed regulations that would make contraception less accessible to American women.
  • She celebrates the fact her family is ordinary, dealing with everyday issues like teen pregnancy to bond with moms everywhere, but as Governor stripped funding for pregnant mothers who may not have the same family support systems the Palins clearly have.
  • She wants people to know she is making the best choices based on her values, and hold her daughter's choices up as a model, but would deny that same right to choose to all other American women, refusing them the opportunity to make decisions based on their own family values even in cases of rape and incest.
  • She holds up her "pro-life" family values to motivate the far-right, but would not even utter the words during the most significant speech of her political career as millions of less ideological Americans watched. Was Palin hoping moderate women just wouldn't notice? Some might call that sexist.
  • She wants to be in the Oval Office when John McCain starts reviewing "short lists" for the next two (or three) Supreme Court appointments, but is not ready to answer questions about her own judicial philosophy.
  • She wants to sell her story as a maverick reformer who took on the "big boys" in her own party, but joined John McCain who won't help women stand up for equal pay for equal work.
  • Saying she's made "executive decisions," she touts her experience as Mayor and Governor, but is being sheltered from media who mights ask about those decisions and their impact on families other than her own.
  • She wants to continue to divide the nation by playing to base fears and fomenting Culture Wars, and thinks by putting lipstick on it, Americans will just laugh and call it "change."

It is Sarah Palin's policies that are hypocritical and scandalous, and no one but Sarah made those up. She hasn't said one word other than her pre-programmed stump speech in nearly two weeks. She's like the Stepford Wives meet the Manchurian candidate. If she's the future of the Republican party, why won't they let her speak for herself? If she's such a strong leader, why can't she answer questions about policy, not biography and family? The only scandal involving Sarah Palin is her lack of ethics, abuse of power, and hypocrisy in suggesting that the private choices her family made should be denied to other families. Far from being a fresh face, she's just more of the same old Big Oil Bush culture war cronyism and crooks that are in Washington now, on a ticket with Mr. Keating Five "savings and loan scandal" himself. Not exactly the people needed in the midst of economic, financial, housing, and energy crisis. This isn't change, no matter how many times McCain says the word. This is cross dressing Karl Rove.

Are Right Wing Christians Destined For Hell???

I was always told that LYING is a SIN!!! That LIARS are worse than THIEVES!!! I was told that MURDER is a SIN!!! I was told If I committed such acts, I'd go to Hell!!! I was told, If you steal, it's a sin!!!

When one bears false witness against a neighbor (Iraq) and then goes about murdering innocent Iraqi's, some believe to STEAL their OIL, I get confused as to why the RIGHT becomes so concerned when a woman decides to get rid of a parasite which invades her body???

There may be good reason for a woman to use tools, which science has advanced, and which nature (GOD) has allowed us to discover, to abort!!! Why, then, is it considered so negatively by the RIGHT??? They allow for so much, which appears to be truly sinful, and go about committing (trying to justify) all kinds of crimes against humanity!!! Easily moved to dwell on a single issue, presented for their consumption by the Republican RIGHT, will they be judged for such hypocrisy!!!

Even the saints, like Augustine, had their own ideas about when life begins. Certainly, semen is not a child!!

If I am correct, is being Republican more important than staying out of hell???

I reckon you were similarly parasitic to your mother’s womb and now you feel so sorry that you were born alive that you feel entitled to suck the life out of others.

Nonsense!!! I value ALL life!!!-:) Your PERCEPTION of what "life" is, IMVHO, is ill conceived!!! What you BELIEVE is your business!!! Practice what you believe without trying to impose it on others!! Mind your own business!! If you don't want to teach your children to use condoms (apparently Palin doesn't believe in this kind of education), or if you, yourself, do not believe in such devices, so be it!!!

As far as I'm concerned, it is none of my business what a woman does with parasites which invade her body!! If she doesn't want it/them to hatch, that's her business!! If there are reasons, medical or personal, about which only she has knowledge, WHO ARE YOU (WE) to JUDGE????

Nature is wonderful. In my own family, we have had a child, who from birth had no functionality and needed total care 24/7. She lived for about 12 years, was loved, cared for, and sadly missed upon her passing. There are people who treat their dogs and cats, similarly!!! Many of us are attracted to love, and care for others, including all kinds of animals and living things. Some cultures would not even kill a fly!!!-:)

The very people who cry about the birth of unwanted seed are not very thoughtful about adopting that seed when it has come to term. They might better opt for a cat, dog, snake or teddy bear!!!

In our family, we care for the children which nature provides. WE are not murderers!!! We are loving, caring, devoted, human beings who take care of our own!!!

If there are nightly emissions, I speak for myself, I don't consider that I have murdered a child. The seed is washed out when I do the laundry!!! We care for ours better than those who preach about which they have absolutely no knowledge or experience!!!

BTW, in my case, life began a 40 'n' not when I was just a twinkle in me Mother's eye!!!-:) If life is eternal, I have little worry that, if my mother had not conceived me, I wouldn't still be here!!!-:)

you forgot the environment, abortion rights, contraception rights, health care for all, assault weapons ban, legalization of drugs, banning wiretapping, expanding the list of prosecutable hate crimes, required dna testing, prison reform, illegal immigrants becoming undocumented workers, slavery reparations, affirmative action, minimum wage increases, no border fence, tax increases, corporate governance, bank regulation, anti trust regulation, small business regulation, financial aid for all, animals being defined as people, fuel efficiency regulation, emissions trading, energy depletion, social security for all and at all ages, welfare for more people, making Iraq, Afghanistan, and Iraq our allies, talk to those who have vowed to destroy us thereby ascribing fallacious moral equivalency, disarm all of our military branches and live in peace as we get destroyed, homosexuals in the military and in our bathrooms or making a separate bathroom for them because heterosexuals are discriminated against, continue educating our children that all life on earth somehow descended from one cell without also telling them that someone must have put that cell there in the first place, digital rights, stem cells, nationalizing of all industry, fairness doctrine, who needs the first amendment---YOU KNOW, FACISM or, if we are lucky, SOCIALISM---because we are too week to take care of ourselves. You know, we are all victims.

Best blog ever! Timothy+ that was very nicely written, succinct and to the point. I am very impressed. So is everyone else on this site.

I get the feeling you don't want to regulate banks, so with Bear Stearns, Indymac, Freddie & Fannie down for the count, and Lehman and Merrill on the edge of collapse, this is the best time for an unwanted pregnancy, right? And "Truth," enabling such idiocy: were you visited by the Angel Moronic? Both of you read like you checked reality at your respective houses of worship and never bothered to reclaim it. You both seem to have difficulty with reality checks, RH and otherwise, or are you just part of that prankster crowd who likes to see what it takes to anger the rest of US?
