Cecile Richards Addresses the DNC

Today Cecile Richards, daughter of former Governor of Texas Ann Richards and president of Planned Parenthood Action, addressed the Democratic National Convention. In many ways, this isn’t significant. Choice has been a part of the Democratic platform since Roe v. Wade . In fact, Richards received a less warm welcome than the speaker following her, Congressman Dennis Kucinich.

Still, choice groups like Planned Parenthood Action do more work than the public realizes. The group’s non-advocacy arm has been providing affordable prenatal and women’s health care for low-income women for decades. Without it, abortion may as well be illegal for the poor who cannot afford it.

The reason the advocacy arm is important is because they began to recognize that without political advocacy, the non-advocacy arm may not be able to continue providing health care, birth control, and abortions to low-income women in America.

A Medical Student and Former Komen Affiliate Responds to the Foundation's Recent Decision

I am a recent member of Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s Young Women’s National Advisory Council, a previous director of Stony Brook University School of Medicine’s chapter of Medical Students for Choice, and a future family medicine physician. I was incredibly disappointed by Susan G. Komen’s recent decision to end its funding of breast health programs at Planned Parenthood affiliates across the United States.

An Apology, But Not A Reversal, From the Susan G. Komen Foundation

The Komen Foundation’s statement says that it “will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities.” But this is NOT a reversal of any kind.

for reminding us what's important in this election. It's all about Supreme Court Justices. Whom do we want choosing the next justices? At least THREE may retire in the next few years.
