Pro-(Controlling Your) Life

In honor of Mother's Day, Revolution Health has developed this useful interactive map that gives all 50 states a "momScore" designed, according to the site to:

"...compare and evaluate maternal and early childhood health across the United States."

To determine the scores, researchers evaluated a variety of factors including: access to prenatal care, maternal mortality, availability of child care services, risk of pregnancy complications, affordability of children's health insurance and more.

And what did researchers uncover?

Well, you'll need to head over to the site to figure out how your state rates but one cat I can let out of the bag is this: states like Louisiana and Mississippi were at the bottom of the barrel. In essence, both states (among a handful of others) have utterly failed to adequately prioritize and care for their mothers and children. Why is that important?

Louisiana and Mississippi have received failing grades in another domain as well.

Both carry the weight of having some of the most restrictive, heinous anti-choice legislation on their books in the entire country. In Louisiana's case, the state legislature has deemed it a higher priority to spend their resources and energy on laws that: force women to get their husband's permission to have an abortion, ensure abortion is outlawed should Roe v. Wade be overturned, and force women to wait 24 hours and listen to a state-mandated speech by a physician after deciding to have an abortion rather than ensure that women receive high-quality pre-natal care or paid family leave.

Mississippi has an appalling record, according to momScore, when it comes to ensuring that babies who are actually born in the state remain alive, healthy and thriving. And if you're a mother in Mississippi? You're more likely to face the possibility of unconstitutional bans against your right not to have a child if you don't want to rather than ensuring that the children you do have are given access to health insurance, and quality early childcare.

It's no coincidence that those states which fail to prioritize the health and well-being of mothers and children are also those states with the most restrictions when it comes to allowing women control over their own reproduction and family planning.

Interestingly (though not surprisingly), the south (aka, the home of the Southern Baptists) ranks at the bottom of the ladder. While poverty levels have some impact on that, so do the policies of the public institutions that provide the services to support mothers.

What is appalling is dismembering a living person and silencing any parental, moral or political opposition to that heinous act.

If you were that person, and were allowed to have a voice, do you think you would say, "Thank you mommy for aborting me". The arrogance of political correctness is also appalling including the Orwellian misuse of the word "choice" --- I guess within that world view some pigs really are more equal than others! I sign this blog with my famous relative's name because, in addition to working against slavery and for sufferage she was pro-life.

can I borrow it?
Appalling is the state barging in on a private medical decision and telling a living, breathing, sentient person (a woman) the government will decide how many kids she has. Even worse is the state turning its back and refusing to help her care for these children once they are born. You are on your own once out of the womb;apparently the kids already here aren't cute 'n cuddly like fetuses are.

Unless you are willing to take a few million babies home with you, I think you had better get off your high horse. Everyone gets so up in arms over abortion killing babies and all that stuff. What exactly do you think happens to a child that goes home with a mother that didn't want it to begin with? Have you taken a look at the number of children in state care in this country? Or the number of children killed and abused by their parents? Or the number of babies born addicted to drugs? It is so easy for all these self righteous people to wave their finger and lecture people when they themselves never ever have had to walk a mile in the shoes of those they judge. If you don't believe in abortion, you don't have to get one. It isn't your right to impose your beliefs on others when you don't understand the circumstances at hand.

I agree - your analysis that the Southern states rank lowest in part because of the poverty we see in those states is right on. Which is all the more reason not to be spending financial resources on laws that do nothing to help those women and children attain a quality of life that everyone deserves.

Just because two things are correlated does not mean that one caused the other. While I do agree that the two are probably very closely related (states that recognize the importance of women's rights and health typically understand that legal abortion is vital to both of those, there are probably other factors affecting it, too. Such as poverty, like Caitlain mentioned. (And, like you said, that is why thoses states need to spend their money more wisely.)

If you abort, where are your new adherents to come from?

If your mother aborted you, would you thank her?

both are still completely lacking in logic.
To answer the first one: Many new pro choicers were was pro lifers who came to their senses when they saw how anti abortion tactics and laws were actually causing women more harm than the abortion they formerly railed against.

This second question, well, that is one is so utterly stupid it doesn't deserve a response. If my mother had chosen to abort me,it would have been her right. I feel I just would have been reincarnated.

Under a different screen name, I would STILL be calling this question utterly stupid and not deserving of a response.

If you abort, where are your new adherents to come from?

This doesn't even make sense... considering that those of us who are pro-choice are all born persons.

If your mother aborted you, would you thank her?

First... do you think the born children who are abused and neglected thank their mothers?  What about those actual born children who were murdered by their mothers?  Further, if the Smith's had chosen to terminate a pregnancy, perhaps I would have been born to the Jones' .. and considering I would have no idea that "Mrs. Smith" had chosen to abort I suppose thanking her wouldn't be an option.  This question is ridiculous and certainly not a valid argument against abortion.
