The pro-choice Republican organization Republicans for Choice has endorsed Sen. John McCain for President, saying that he was the group's "second choice" to Rudy Giuliani. Chairman of the group Ann Stone told CyberCast News, "(McCain) is (pro-life), but it's not at the top of his agenda, not like Huckabee or the born-again Romney...He's shown his willingness to reach across the party, and we look forward to those discussions." Though Republican Majority for Choice, a more prominent pro-choice Republican organization, has not endorsed McCain -- as RMC co-chair Jennifer Stockman said, "We only endorse pro-choice Republicans" -- Kellie Ferguson, president of the group, indicated that she trusted McCain to be more willing to work with pro-choice advocates than the other Republican presidential candidates. Ferguson stated: "For genuine candidates and genuine elected officials who disagree with us on [Roe], there are so many issue that we do agree on within the reproductive rights world - we should be focusing on sex education, we should be focusing on abstinence plus, we should be focusing on emergency contraception for rape victims...For someone like John McCain, we disagree on the issue, definitely, we as a Republican organization support a woman’s right to choose would not be endorsing him, but would he be willing to open the door to discuss how to lessen the incidence of abortion? I think he would" (emphasis mine). Would he, really? Despite being a vocal opponent of legal abortion, McCain has never cosponsored or supported legislation that would lessen the need for abortion, like a bill expanding access to contraception. As NARAL Pro-Choice America president Nancy Keenan wrote on Bush v. Choice this morning, John McCain is not the "moderate maverick" the media makes him out to be. All the way back to 1987, McCain has never received higher than a 10 percent approval rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America. "Most Americans don’t know that John McCain is extremely anti-choice," Keenan wrote in a letter to supporters this morning. Indeed, McCain has bucked the party line on touchy issues like immigration and campaign finance reform. But on choice, he has been consistent -- consistently opposed. A spokesperson for NARAL Pro-Choice America added, "We clearly categorize John McCain as anti-choice based on his 25 years of voting against women's health and privacy. McCain has gone even further than Bush in calling for the reversal of Roe v. Wade. Describing McCain as anything but anti-choice is quite a stretch." Pro-choice Republican groups may be admired for their willingness to work on prevention with any candidate (though it's not as if non-partisan and Democratic pro-choice groups aren't), but in believing John McCain will work on proven measures to reduce the abortion rate, Republicans for Choice is naive.

abstinence-plus is the act of actively protecting yourself 100% from all the diseases found commonly among the sodomites. Also, no suprise the abortoholics will endorse a pro-abortion candidate who is a liberal Dem with the nominal GOP moniker for votes and show.... sometimes this election cycle seems like an upside down reality! "Pro-choice" groups are endorsing anti-choice candidates; Romney got to position himself as the true conservative despite his record. What next? Ann Stone does not have a group. She represents NO ONE. Ann Stone has been a leader on pro choice issues longer than most if not all of the RMC crowd. RMC does good work too but that is no reason to tear Ann down. You are only helping the anti choice activists when you do that...or maybe that is your purpose? I have never heard or read Ann tear down RMC or any other group...in fact just the opposite...she praised them to me and others by email just last month. I called Ann after I read the attack on her. She did not endorse McCain...her group only endorses pro choice candidates and they did endorse Giuliani....but she reported on her website that McCain was voted as the number two choice by her membership as their choice. By the way RFC's membership includes hundreds of national, state and local Republican officeholders including Joann Davidson who is the co-chair of the national Republican Party. Her membership totals 150,000 which Ann has reported and since she has let the Wish List, Planned Parenthood and others use her list (I know since I called her after I got mailings from them to ask Ann since the way my name was listed I knew it was RFC) that figure can be verified...I have never seen any hard evidence as to how big the Republican Majority's membership is but from their website they do appear to throw some big and impressive parties...and they do have some good info on the site... Better we all work together and stop taking pot shots....let's remember who our adversary is....if all the energy that has been used over the years by those in the pro choice movement to attack others had been focused where it should be...just think...maybe we would have vanquished the real foe by now...just a thought..... Republicans for Choice, and the Log Cabin Republicans. Why do some people enjoy getting kicked in the teeth, politically? Republicans for Choice and the Log Cabin Republicans believe in TRUE conservative ideals of fiscal responsibility, a smaller and more manageable government, and limited government power. Not the perversion of right-wing conservatism which has been eating the soul of the GOP for the past 30 years. They are cockeyed optimists who still believe they can defeat this evil and bring their fellow Republicans back to their senses. (Yeah, sounds like a very familiar movie plot, dunnit?) He's pro-choice and more interested in governing well than in partisan loyalty. He's also doing great things in New York City to really bring about change for the people and the environment. He's not in the race yet, but he could be. If you want him to run, there's a petition you can sign to tell him to run at draftbloomberg.com |
