If Hypocrisy Were an Olympic Event…..

I hope that everyone saw the stinging blurb in Roll Call yesterday on our wayward friend, Senator Vitter, and his adamant support for abstinence-only-until-marriage programs. If not here's an excerpt:
As the comedians like to say, "you can't make this stuff up!" If hypocrisy were an Olympic event, Senator Vitter would get the gold medal. And he wouldn't be the only "family values" champion lining up for the gold. Remember Randall Tobias, former AIDS Czar and defender of the abstinence-only ideology at PEPFAR? Didn't he tap into the same Madam's services as Senator Vitter? And how about Mr. Wolfowitz at the World Bank? At a time when he was trying to undermine support for international family planning programs, wasn't he also arranging "sweetheart deals" for his live-in (as in not married) girlfriend? And who can forget the Administration's abstinence-only-until-marriage "enforcer", Claude Allen, who resigned after being charged with felony theft. And, of course, there was the famous family values champion—and two-time adulterer—Newt Gingrich. I suppose this would all be very funny were it not for the real damage these "family-values" hypocrites have caused to real young people through their championing of discredited abstinence-only programs. Which brings me to our Democratic "friends" in the House who just yesterday staked out their own claim in the hypocrisy Olympics by passing an appropriations bill that increases funding for these failed abstinence-only programs by 25 percent—more than the Republican House was ever able to do. And this is supposed to represent the Democratic vision of "prevention first"? Infuriating!

Great analysis - I'd only step up the level of hypocrisy from the sports metaphor to Mount Olympus in the sense of Olympian classic Greek tragedy . . . We poor humans become the victims of the all-too evident foibles and failings of the neo-Olympians . . . whose greatest fault is they have forgotten they are as flawed and human as the rest of us. Their policies, from Iraq to Abstinence-only, have been based on statuary with feet of clay. Let's work to get away from romantic and idealized versions of ourselves and move to honest science and shared compassion. Corruption Gone Wild Freshly restructured and more-or-less on the mend, USAID’s PEPFAR is yet growing at the optimal time. For 1 year, whistleblower Vaughn Bruenn said the time is at hand for a full investigation. That request has yet to materialize. "I think USAID needs to be very careful about allocating further funds until they can prove they can reduce the number of prior lucrative fraudulent PEPFAR contract awards," said Bruenn, who openly complained about a $10.7M HIV/Hepatitis PEPFAR grant award going to Northrop Grumman 45 days after the US Supreme Court Denied Appeal Rehearing of his unlawful termination suit (Bruenn v, Northrop) after contracting, treatment of Hepatitis C. In May, USAID lost Randall Tobias to a well published DC madam sex scandal. The president announced a week ago, that he was appropriating an additional $30B for PEPFAR. The prior $15B is no longer there nor was misuses mentioned. Other also have shown to question logic of giant defense contractors like Northrop into the compassion care arena, especially as Northrop’s recover from years-long slump, openly stated desire to diversify, triggered by numerous DOD investigations concerns and fierce military contract competition. During that period of Tobias reign at USAID -- when Northrop went from zero to $300B – now they’re the single largest USAID contractor. Congress became acutely aware of the crisis. But their own campaign funding sources were in many cases were often too rickety and resorted to Northrop for contributions (see Corruption Gone Wild) TICKING CLOCK The lack of control puzzles Bruenn. He noted, that he wrote every member of congress, all turned their back on him and the ensuing USAID crisis. Tobias remained at his post for 1 year, " Bruenn said some members of congress may be delaying action in hopes of catching the impeachment wave that is rumored for this fall”.. "I think there's a lot of reluctance on the part of congress to go out on a limb when impeachment proceedings are looming," he said. A QUESTION OF NEED Officials generally agree that while the USAID needs to increase funding, the cost of mammoth fraud at the hands of Tobias/Northrop does not necessarily outweigh or lower the need for a full investigation. Ironically, I think these hypocrits have proved their point. It is better to wait til marriage and remain faithful afterwards. I bet they now wish they would have taken their own advice. Do as they say, not as they do - cause look what a mess they've made! I am from a long long time ago in a galaxey far far away where there was no sex education in schools. Boys learned about sex in the time honored matter, in the lockerroom. We were much more sexually represed than the current generation. Althogh there was no sex education, there were ministers and parents speaking abstinence. I am here to say that it didn't work. I lost my virginity at age sixteen and most of my fellow compatriates did also. We were out there doing the deed in the heat of passion with little or no knowledge of birth control or protection from STDs. As a result several teenage pregnancies resulted. Abortion was illegal, however the names of the quack doctors, and our coat hanger specialists were not hard to find. Responsible reality based sex education is needed badly. Abstinence Based Sex education does not work. Teens are going to have sex and they need to know how to protect themselves from pregnancy and STD's. When are the powers at be get there hypicritcal heads out of their buts and see the light. Being from Louisiana I can say Senator Vitters actions in the matter of the call girls is typical for Louisiana politicians.Pour out shame on us all for having such a piece of garbage in the Senate and maybe folks down here will get rid of him next time he runs for office.» |
