New Federal Ban on “Sex And Race Selection” Abortions Has Worst Name Ever

Hasn't poor Susan B. Anthony been co-opted by anti-choice activists enough?

Apparently under the mistaken impression that Congress was getting dangerously close to accomplishing a bill that wasn’t about abortion, Arizona Rep. Trent Franks has saved the House by introducing a bill that would place a federal ban on abortions based on the gender or race of a fetus.

He is calling it the “Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act of 2011.”  No, that is not a joke.

Of course, there is very little evidence of any abortions happening in the U.S. due to gender preference.  And even less regarding race, since the woman probably knows the race of her fetus when she gets pregnant and if she doesn’t, it is not like there are any tests that will determine it before the birth. But since when has that mattered to anti-choice politicians?
