Change Is A-Coming (Or, as They Say in Oklahoma, "If I Wanted Government in My Womb, I'd F*ck a Senator.")

By Jennifer Dalven, Director, ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project

I am so excited I am beside myself. I'm a long-time reproductive health advocate looking at politicians around the country lining up to make it harder for a woman to get birth control, to defund Planned Parenthood, and to set up demeaning and obstructive roadblocks for women seeking abortions. And yet I am positively giddy. Why?

Letter to TX Media: Women can make their own reproductive choices

A federal court just gave Texas’s demeaning and invasive mandatory ultrasound the green light. Enforcement could potentially begin as early as January 31.

Send a letter to Texas media NOW—let them know that this ruling is unjust and hurts women.

URGENT: Anti-Choice Groups & Their Allies in Congress Want to Eliminate Birth Control Coverage. Stop them. Ask the President to Stand Strong.

Planned Parenthood URGENT: Anti-choice groups and their allies in Congress want to eliminate birth control coverage. Stop them. Ask the president to stand strong. Ever since the Obama administration issued regulations requiring insurance coverage for birth control with no co-pays, anti-women's health groups and their allies in Congress have been fighting tooth and nail to take that coverage away from women. We can't let them succeed — not after fighting so hard to secure coverage for preventive care that is so critical for women.

Tell the US Senate to Save Second Chance

A program started under George W. Bush, the Second Chance Act provides resources to men and women on their way out of prison, and greatly reduces the rate of recidivism.  The program is now under threat. The House has appropriated money for it, but the Senate is threatening to zero it out.

Tell Congress to Support Real Sex Education and Stop Funding Abstinence-Only Programs

In their version of the Fiscal Year (FY) 2012 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education spending bill, House Republicans are attempting to cut funding to essential programs while supporting funding for ineffective abstinence-only programs.

Wasting tax money on ineffective programs, while at the same time cutting funding for programs that clearly have a positive effect on the health and well-being of young people and women, is not only fiscally irresponsible, it is reckless and negligent for elected officials to so brazenly ignore the needs of their constituents.

Marry Me, Sam!

Governor Brownback wants all of the single Kansas moms to say “I Do”, especially those on any kind of government assistance. He’s even offering to pay for some coercion…I mean…“counseling” to get all those single ladies in the mood for matrimony. Heck, he’ll even pay for the marriage license...how sweet of a deal is that?? We’ll just put this ring on your finger little lady, sign on the dotted line and now you have become some other chump’s responsibility. Welfare mom problem…solved!
